This is the final image of Sentry for my solo show #Aurora at Thinkspace Gallery LA. I added about 3 coats of GAC 100 by Golden before I did anything. I then added layers of oil glazing, starting with the thin warm, shadows and working up into the lights. The texture in the background is a mixture of crushed soft pastels and oil paint. The warm areas left over are from the pencil/coloured pencil underneath. I still had to fix mistakes I made right up to the end… The goal with the oils is to let the rendered form underneath show through to give it depth. The areas left white in the lights of the flesh, will have the most brightness. I think it’s because the light passes easily through thin layers of pigment, reflects off the white surface and bounces back through, enhancing colours. It’s just fine tuning the colour shifts and experimenting a lot. I had no idea I would add this green light until the end. So that’s my process for this one…I hope you found it interesting. If you’d like to see more, I have progress shots from the other pieces in the show I can go through. Just let me know! Cheers and much love, Rod #rodluff #progress #sentry #aurora #painting #drawing #thinkspace #gallery
This is the last progress shot. Added more colours behind the figure- mixing iridescent paint with blue green pastel around her head, and yellows on the owl. There’s also some red coloured pencil on the top right to enhance the greens. I also added the same reds with coloured pencil in the half tones of the figure more. I decided that the lightest areas will be kept basically white, so when I add the blue/green light on top, it will be brighter. Also hatching to convey the form the best I can. After this point I’m diving into the deep end and experimenting. I don’t have a plan for what comes next… #rodluff #drawing #aurora #progress #wip #acrylic #painting #thinkspace #gallery
Here’s the third progress shot of “Sentry" for my solo show #Aurora at Thinkspace Gallery LA. I started adding more greens to the background and more pencil textures. On the figure I gave the halftones more love and modelling the form to turn it into the shadows. Adding reflected light in the shadows too. Little bit on the owl. Also adding red coloured pencil in the shadow areas, particularly where the blood vessels are close to the surface like the knuckles, cheeks, nose, ears, elbows etc. There’s more of a gradient of light on the figure hopefully by this time. One more progress shot to follow tonight! #rodluff #drawing #aurora #progress #wip #acrylic #painting #thinkspace #gallery
Thanks for the great response! Encourages me to continue posting the pieces. These progress shots are from “Sentry" for my solo show #Aurora at Thinkspace Gallery, open till August 3rd. This is the second stage, with a look at the materials. Building up more tones, and on the right is my bottle of liquitex iridescent medium, which I’m mixing with a bit of acrylic blues and greens for the background. I’ve also worked more on the face, fleshing out the planes of the head to match the lighting on the rest of the body. More to follow shortly! #rodluff #drawing #aurora #progress #wip #acrylic #painting #thinkspace #gallery
Today I’m posting progress shots from “Sentry" from my solo show #Aurora at Thinkspace Gallery, open till August 3rd. This is the first stage, after i transfer the sketch Im using pencil and acrylic washes. I’m not trying to reach perfect tones, just trying to separate light from shadow and the basic tonal structure. I’m trying to get the construction and anatomy as best I can too. I’m also rendering the form using hatching, trying to sculpt the form with lines of the pencil. It’s all just making an underlayer. Hope you find this interesting! #rodluff #drawing #aurora #progress #wip #acrylic #painting #thinkspace #galllery
Here’s a look at “Solar Wind" from Aurora, which is already sold.

I was interviewed by Joy Shannon from the OC Arts Blog for my show, “Aurora." Click the photo of me from the opening of the show to read it.
I have difficulty expressing my thoughts and ideas behind the art, but I hope you find it interesting. If you enjoy my work then it might be a good way to get more insight into the process and inspiration behind it.
Here’s a small quote from Joy in the article, which was thoughtfully written and might give you a taste of what I discussed in the interview:
"Currently on display at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City until August 3, Luff’s work truly captures something far deeper than words can express. Interestingly, Luff visualizes his vibrant, nature-inspired compositions like a song, with each character he includes, like a different instrument adding its voice to the mix."
Big thanks to Joy for coming to the show and for taking the time to feature my work.
Francis Tsai is an illustrator and concept artist who has worked on a variety of projects including Marvel Comics, Wizards of the Coast, as well as movies and games. Francis was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in 2010. When he couldn’t use his hands or arms, he painted with his toe using his iPhone. Soon he also lost the use of his feet.
Earlier this year (2013), Francis’ good friend Teddy worked with Tobii to put together an eye-gaze (PC Eye) + tablet (Tablet Kiosk) setup. Francis very quickly figured out a way to begin creating art again using a combination of Sketchup and Photoshop.
Check out this video from Tobii on Francis and how he uses PC Eye and tablet to make incredible art! (by AACTobii)
Francis Tsai is really inspiring. This is one blog you’ll want to follow, take a few minutes to watch this video-he proves that you don’t have to give in to limitations.
Despite being unable to use his hands and feet, technology allows him to paint with his eyes using digital software.
I think I wanna put :Adapt : Survive : Prevail near my drawing table somewhere.
